Elena Rybakina, the number one tennis player in the world, pulled out of the Tokyo Open because of a physical issue. This opened the door for Yulia Putintseva to advance to the semifinals. Rybakina had won all her matches in the Kazakhstani second round. She also withdrew from the Pan Pacific Open for the second time in a row.
